Everton fullback Leighton Baines has spoken on the rumours linking him to Manchester United over the summer, saying ‘ ‘there wasn’t a great deal in it’.

Baines’ name was continually mentioned in regards to a move to Old Trafford to provide competition for Patrice Evra, but the move never materialised and instead United signed the cheaper Alexander Buttner from Vitesse Arnhem.

Baines took to the field in the opening game of the season to face Manchester United at Goodison Park and emerged victorious over his prospective club, but with the transfer window now closed, Baines has spoken on the speculation claiming to be none the wiser about a move:

“People were asking me and yet I didn’t know anything.

“It was getting mentioned that often that I was getting puzzled by it and yet I’d heard nothing.

“As far as I knew, there was not a great deal in it.”
